I’ll discuss how to wear gray for men and how it fits into your flexible wardrobe in this article.
When men are trying to put together a classic wardrobe that will work for them, I believe gray is one of the most neglected colors out there.
In this article, I’ll focus on two pieces that you should consider adding to your wardrobe.
I’ll tell you where you can acquire them, as well as a few additional methods to incorporate gray into your wardrobe with shirts, shoes, and potentially a few other items.
Again, it’s not commonly seen in a modern man’s wardrobe.
Gray Flannel Trousers
The gray flannel trousers are the first item I’d like to discuss.
This is, in my opinion, one of the most underappreciated but useful pieces in a man’s wardrobe, and I’m about to explain why.
I have a fantastic pair that don’t have belt loops and instead have side tabs. The material isn’t that exciting. These aren’t going to catch people’s attention, which is crucial when it comes to trousers.
They should be able to move their eyes up and down, looking at your face, your feet, and back up to your face, where you want to be able to make eye contact and converse with them.
However, the perfect pair of trousers can make you appear taller and thinner by allowing the eyes to move up and down.
A good pair of gray flannels can go with practically anything in your wardrobe.
I have ten shirts, all of which will be white and blue. Isn’t it straightforward? What’s more, guess what? All of them will look good in a pair of gray trousers.
I have fourteen sports jackets in my wardrobe that will look great with these gray flannel trousers.
The dark green jackets are going to be ideal. A classic is gray flannel with a dark-colored blue jacket; it’s on par with a suit in terms of formality.
In fact, you may dress up a light-colored suit or a suit with a striking pattern by pairing gray trousers with a navy jacket.
I have a large collection of blue jackets. It’ll work with all of them, and that’s the beauty of it.
You can make so many different combos once you invest in a good piece of gray flannel.
There are a lot of good manufacturers out there.
They’re available at Brooks Brothers, and they start at around $250. In Asia, you can locate some custom clothiers who will do them for around $150.
Choose a custom clothier with caution in that part of the world. The materials can be really poor at times.
However, if you want a quality material and a great bespoke clothier, you may go to Savile Row and expect to pay between $200 and $400 for custom trousers.
You don’t have to worry about blues because they’re gray, or because they’re a non-color.
However, you must be cautious about the blues you choose. You can’t really try to match blues with other blues, and a lot of great tone objects won’t necessarily work with blues.
You don’t have the problem with gray because it’s a non-color.
Gray Jacket
A gray sports jacket would be a good second option. You can choose from solid grays or ones with intricate patterns. You might choose a jacket with a textured pattern. It’ll have a pleasant atmosphere.
You may go with a solid color, houndstooth, or anything with a more intricate pattern.
A gray jacket will go with a variety of shirts. The blues, I believe, will look the finest.
The white shirts may make you appear paler. If you have very light skin or are above the age of 50, you should avoid wearing white with this because it will dehydrate your skin.
So go with a blue and maybe look at some warmer tone shirts if you want to branch out from this spectrum.
However, I enjoy it when you can begin to introduce some contrast. A pair of white trousers could work, but I’d only wear them in the summer.
However, beige trousers will look great throughout the fall, winter, spring, and even summer.
I could go on and on about this subject.
You might be asking why gray flannels fell out of favor if they were so fantastic.
It was actually denim since it was less expensive. Denim, in many people’s minds, was a bit more durable and easy to care for, thus gray flannels faded away.
During the war, a lot of flannel was used, and it was something that was closely monitored. We didn’t use as much denim during the war, so there weren’t as many rationing restrictions.
This and other factors conspired against it.
The same thing happened with sports jackets. Nowadays, a lot of men don’t wear sports jackets.
Other Things to Consider
Let’s chat about a few of other topics.
First and foremost, gray shirts. In general, I don’t care for them if they’re solid. When you bring that cool little pattern, though, I really enjoy it.
Wearing too much gray can be dangerous.
It’s not a good idea to wear a gray jacket with gray trousers. It’s a choice for me, which is why I proceeded in that sequence.
Start with the trousers; acquire a couple pairs and you’ll be able to mix and match. Those with the side tabs are my favorites. It’s truly one-of-a-kind for me, and it distinguishes myself. I make sure they fit properly, and I don’t need a belt because of the side tabs.
I also own a pair of gray trousers with no back pockets. This was due to my desire for a more sleek silhouette.
Gray is a color that permits you to concentrate on other aspects of your life. Gray isn’t a color, and it won’t draw attention to itself.
Gray is one of my favorite colors because it allows you to focus on other things; it doesn’t steal the show, sits in the background, and helps you to develop a more versatile wardrobe.
