The effects of lavender oil as a hair growth stimulant were evaluated by researchers from Korea and compared to those of the pharmaceutical product minoxidil (Rogaine).
The results showed that lavender oil was just as effective as minoxidil in considerably increasing the number of hair follicles, increasing the depth of the hair follicles, and increasing the thickness of the dermal layer.
In another study, individuals with alopecia areata who regularly had a blend of essential oils, including lavender, massaged into their scalps, saw significant gains of 44%, compared to only 15% of patients in the control group.
“These results indicated that LO [lavender oil] has a marked hair growth-promoting effect, as observed morphologically and histologically … Thus, LO could be practically applied as a hair growth-promoting agent,” the researchers noted.
