How to Style a Hoodie (6 Ideas)

How to Style a Hoodie

Whether you choose to dress for comfort or style, a hoodie is a terrific garment that works for everyone.

I’m talking about a hooded sweatshirt, which is one of my all-time favorite fashion pieces.

I’ll teach you how to style them, how they should fit, and which styles are the most versatile so you can get the most bang for your buck while still looking and feeling amazing.

Let’s start with the basics.

How Should a Hoodie Fit?

I don’t think you ever want a hoodie to be too tight; you don’t want it to be too small because that negates the idea of it being a comfy layering garment.

On the other hand, you don’t want it to be overly big and enormous, because while it may be comfy, it won’t be flattering.

It’s always smarter to keep it somewhat fitting with enough room to breathe in and move around a little bit.

I’m 6’0″ and weigh around 185 pounds, so I generally always choose a large.

Best Hoodie Styles

Next, let’s take a look at some of the top hoodie styles.

Things have gotten a little crazy in the last few years. I’ve seen large, unusual zippers, and bizarre graphics all over the place.

In the end, these are, in my opinion, a waste of money. Because you may be able to wear them for a season or two, but they will eventually go out of style.

Something in a solid, extremely neutral, flexible color is always a good choice. If you’re going to wear something printed, keep it as simple as possible. It could, for example, be a black sweater with a black logo. So it’s present, but it’s also very subtle. You won’t notice it unless you get pretty close to it.

Outfit Ideas

Let’s get started with some outfit ideas.

I’m splitting this into three parts. I’ve got six different looks for you.

Two hoodie styles are just a hoodie. Two styles are teaching you how to layer underneath a hoodie and two styles are demonstrating how to layer over the top of the hoodie to stay warm and attractive during fall and winter.

Hoodie Outfit Idea 1

With just chino shorts, a t-shirt, and a basic sneaker, we start incredibly simple in look one, when it’s still not too cold. You can try something a little more daring. Then there’s your standard hoodie.

By layering that over the top, you’ve created a pretty simple outfit.

With a style like this, I like to add some accessories to really personalize the look as much as I can, with a bracelet and a ring, nothing too over the top, but just a little something extra.

It’s just a simple, casual outfit, but the sneakers add a little something extra. You could opt for a more straightforward option. It’s entirely up to you which style you choose.

An outfit like this appeals to me much.

Hoodie Outfit Idea 2

We’ll start with some basic denim and a plain white t-shirt as a layering item below your hoodie in look two. Then, to add some earth tones, throw on a brown hoodie over the top.

Instead of wearing sneakers, you can use brown boots, which keep things casual overall but offer a little something extra because the hoodie and boots are matched.

It makes it a little more rugged, and it allows you to go to a lot more places than you could comfortably go in sneakers.

Hoodie Outfit Idea 3

In style three, we’ll start with chino pants and layer an orange and navy blue flannel shirt on top. Now we’ll start layering the hoodie over the top of our outfits.

Because you don’t want to dress it up too much, stick to a simple white sneaker for shoes.

You’ll put on the navy hoodie first, then let the collar of the shirt spring out. I like to button it all the way up to the neck, allowing the shirt’s collar to stand out. You can leave the shirt’s front tails dangling a little.

This is one of my favorites because it matches the color of my shirt and hoodie. It’s just an interesting method to start layering and being warm while still showcasing those small features.

Hoodie Outfit Idea 4

In look four, we start with just some skinny black jeans and dress them up a little with a gray turtleneck sweater and black boots, which is a somewhat more upscale version of what I previously discussed.

Wear a black hoody to complete the look. And you’re only letting the turtleneck peek through.

This is a rather gloomy aesthetic overall, but you could play around with the colors if you wanted to. It’s entirely up to you, but I think it’s a great interesting approach for you to seem dressier in a hoodie.

You could also add a pop of color with the turtleneck or just start getting creative with it, but the key is to learn different ways to layer them to stay warm and look great.

Hoodie Outfit Idea 5

Brown jeans can be worn with another earth tone green hoodie in look five. And a pair of white sneakers for a more relaxed look.

I prefer to put the hood up whenever I’m layering a jacket over it to keep it from getting all bunchy. With the denim jacket and hoodie put together, this is a pretty classic look.

This look’s general color pallet is very earthy, it’s very outdoorsy, but it’s also incredibly sophisticated.

Another thing you can do in a similar way is layer the same flannel over the top that we layered under it previously, and it will provide a really great trendy sense.

Hoodie Outfit Idea 6

Finally, in look six, I’m wearing a pair of green chino trousers with a brown hoodie. I’m matching my pants to my boots just because I have a pair of green boots. I really like the color scheme here, which has a military feel to it.

But then I like to add a brown overcoat on top, and this is a really interesting look because my two top pieces and my two bottom pieces are all the same color.

It doesn’t really break up the colors because they’re all so complementary, but it does give it a pretty fun vibe by splitting it between your bottom and top.

However, placing an overcoat on top of a hoodie is always a fantastic idea.

There you have it: six unique ways to wear a hoodie.

Always think of these ensembles in terms of categories; you don’t have to imitate exactly what I’m recommending. You’ll be able to start getting creative with what you already have in your closet or understand what you need to buy once you grasp how to put different types of items together.
